A Tupolev Tu-144S supersonic transport disintegrated in mid-air and crashed into the town of Goussainville during a demonstration flight at the Paris Air Show. Investigation Summary

The Tu-144 involved (MSN 01-2) was engaged in a high-stakes competition with the Anglo-French Concorde to prove the superiority of Soviet supersonic technology. On the final day of the show, the crew, led by Mikhail Kozlov, attempted a more aggressive display than the Concorde. After a low pass over runway 06 at 190 meters, the aircraft climbed steeply to 1,200 meters. It then entered a dive. As the crew attempted to recover, the aircraft reached 750 meters and rolled 40 degrees to the left, generating forces between 4 and 4.5 g. At an altitude of 280 meters and a speed of 780 km/h, the front left wing detached, striking the main wing and puncturing fuel tanks, leading to a total structural breakup. A significant factor in the dive may have been the presence of a French Mirage III fighter jet, which was in the area to photograph the Tu-144's canards. The Soviet crew, possibly unaware of the fighter's exact position or startled by its proximity, may have performed an evasive maneuver that induced negative g-loads, for which the Tu-144 was not designed to the same degree as positive loads.
