Investigation Summary

Flight 445 was the final leg of a three-leg roundtrip originating and ending in Nome. Before the first flight leg of the day, the pilot and dispatcher reviewed weather forecasts indicating moderate icing between 2,000 and 8,000 feet. During the return leg from Unalakleet, the aircraft encountered severe icing, including supercooled large droplets (SLD). Although equipped with a TKS 'weeping wing' ice protection system, the system is intended for escaping icing conditions rather than sustained flight. As the flight approached Nome, the controller reported that both runways were closed for snow removal and suggested the pilot slow down. The pilot reduced power, and airspeed decayed from 160 knots to 110 knots before he briefly increased power to reach 126 knots. However, airspeed decayed again to 99 knots, triggering the Low Airspeed Awareness (LAA) system and automatically disengaging the autopilot. The pilot made manual elevator inputs, pitching the nose up to 10 to 12 degrees, which caused airspeed to drop to 70 knots at 3,100 feet MSL, resulting in an aerodynamic stall. The aircraft's weight, which was 1,058 pounds over the maximum limit for icing conditions, significantly reduced the stall margin and made recovery impossible.
