Simultaneously, a C-130E was on a standard landing pattern. At approximately 300 feet above ground level, the F-16 struck the rear of the C-130. The F-16 pilots, unable to maintain control, ejected after applying full afterburner in a failed recovery attempt. The pilotless F-16 continued its flight path into the Green Ramp, a large parking area where hundreds of paratroopers were staged. The impact with a parked C-141B ignited a massive fuel-fed fireball that traveled directly into the personnel staging area. The C-141B crew was on board preparing the aircraft but no troops had yet boarded; the crew survived the initial impact. The C-130E, despite losing its right elevator, managed to fly away from the field, perform safety checks, and return for a successful landing on the debris-strewn runway.
