Shortly into the flight, the crew encountered a significant weather system and requested a deviation from their planned path to avoid the storm. Air traffic control granted the request, and the pilots initiated a right turn. During this maneuver, the crew attempted to maintain visual flight (VFR) while in instrument meteorological conditions (IFR), a critical error that led to a loss of situational awareness. The aircraft deviated 29.8 miles to the right of the Victor 3 airway. While descending toward 2,000 feet as cleared by Villahermosa approach, the crew failed to verify minimum safe altitudes for their off-airway position in mountainous terrain. The aircraft struck a mountain at an elevation of 6,200 feet and immediately burst into flames. The impact site was located at coordinates 17°24′0″N 92°28′59″W.
