Investigation Summary
The flight departed Sulur Air Force Station at 11:48 IST for a short 80km transit to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. The weather at the departure point was clear, but as the helicopter approached the Nilgiri Hills, it encountered a rolling cloud cover that significantly reduced visibility. At 12:08 IST, shortly after the crew radioed the Wellington helipad to confirm their imminent landing, contact was lost. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter emerge from low clouds at a low altitude before striking a tree and crashing into a tea estate. The impact triggered an intense post-crash fire. While one passenger, Group Captain Varun Singh, initially survived the crash with severe burns, he succumbed to his injuries a week later in the hospital. A tri-service Court of Inquiry was immediately convened to investigate the high-profile accident.

The investigation ruled out mechanical failure, sabotage, or negligence. The primary cause was determined to be an unexpected change in weather conditions in the valley, which led to the helicopter entering clouds.
