Design Lineage
The MD-11 entered service in 1990 as McDonnell Douglas's answer to the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340. It kept the DC-10's three-engine layout — two under-wing, one at the tail base — but added winglets, a smaller horizontal stabilizer with fuel tanks for trim, more efficient CF6/PW4000 engines, and a two-crew glass cockpit. The reduced tailplane and aft CG range were meant to cut cruise drag, but they also shrank the aircraft's longitudinal stability margin.
The Handling Problem
MD-11 pilots consistently report a light, sensitive pitch response, especially in the flare. Combined with a Longitudinal Stability Augmentation System (LSAS) that trims the stabilizer aggressively, the aircraft is unforgiving of late corrections at touchdown. Several hull losses trace to pilot-induced oscillation, hard landings, and tailstrikes that escalated into structural failure — patterns rare on comparable widebodies.
Cargo Second Life
Most passenger operators (Delta, American, Swissair, KLM, Finnair) had exited the type by the mid-2000s, citing fuel burn against twinjets like the 777. The freighter market absorbed the fleet — FedEx and UPS became the dominant operators — but the type's landing-phase accident rate did not improve, and FedEx announced a full MD-11F retirement plan for 2028.
