The accident occurred during a period of challenging weather at LaGuardia. As the DC-4, named 'Mainliner Lake Tahoe', prepared for departure on Runway 18, the tower offered the crew the option to wait out an approaching storm. Captain Benton R. Baldwin elected to proceed. During the takeoff roll, the controls felt 'heavy' and the aircraft failed to respond to back pressure on the control column. Realizing the aircraft would not fly, Baldwin attempted to abort the takeoff with only 1,000 feet of runway remaining. He applied heavy braking and attempted a ground loop to stay within the airport boundaries, but the aircraft's momentum carried it through the perimeter fence. It crossed the Grand Central Parkway, striking an embankment and coming to rest immediately east of the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics. The wreckage settled in a water-filled ditch 800 feet beyond the end of the runway. The subsequent fire and explosion claimed 43 lives, making it the deadliest commercial aviation accident in U.S. history for less than 24 hours until the crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 605.
