Investigation Summary
The aircraft, a 1950s-era jet (serial number 41H-670815) displaying its former military serial WV372, was performing a display sequence that included a Derry Turn followed by a loop. During the loop, the aircraft reached an apex of approximately 2,700 feet, which was insufficient for a safe recovery given its entry speed and the specific flight path. As the aircraft descended in the second half of the loop, it remained in a nose-low attitude until it impacted the A27 road, which was congested with traffic and spectators outside the official airshow boundary. The investigation revealed that the pilot had not received formal training or assessment for escape manoeuvres in the Hawker Hunter. Furthermore, the aircraft was found to be non-compliant with its Permit to Fly because the ejection seat cartridges had expired, though this did not contribute to the cause of the crash itself.
Final Conclusions
The AAIB final report, published on 3 March 2017, concluded the cause was pilot error. The pilot failed to recognise that the aircraft was too low to perform the loop and did not execute an escape manoeuvre. A December 2019 supplement reaffirmed these findings after examining whether G-forces could have impaired the pilot, concluding he remained conscious throughout. In 2022, a coroner's inquest reached a verdict of unlawful killing, although the pilot had been cleared of manslaughter charges in a 2019 criminal trial.

Crew Experience
Captain
Experienced pilot, former RAF Harrier pilot and British Airways captain.
Systems & Failure Modes
Ejection Seat
The Martin-Baker ejection seats were fitted with cartridges that had expired in late 2014. The maintainer had planned to replace them at the next annual inspection in 2016.
Permit to Fly
The aircraft's regulatory compliance was questioned due to the expired cartridges and uncertainties regarding engine overhaul intervals (Mandatory Permit Directives).
Interesting Facts
- 01The aircraft was a 1955-built Hawker Hunter T7 converted from a F4 model.
- 02All 11 fatalities occurred on the ground; the pilot was the sole occupant and survived.
- 03The aircraft was not equipped with a cockpit voice recorder (CVR) or flight data recorder (FDR).
- 04The ejection seat cartridges were found to be past their expiry date at the time of the crash.
- 05The pilot was a highly experienced former RAF instructor and British Airways captain with over 12,000 flight hours.
Safety Actions & Advisories
CAA Display Restrictions
The Civil Aviation Authority restricted vintage jet aircraft to flypasts only over land, banning high-energy aerobatics for swept-wing ex-military jets.
Enhanced Maintenance Regimes
New requirements were introduced for enhanced inspection and maintenance of ex-military aircraft before permits to fly are granted.
Airshow Risk Management
The CAA introduced stricter requirements for airshow organizers, focusing on risk management for areas outside the immediate display venue.
Known Controversies & Unanswered Questions
Cognitive Impairment vs. Pilot Error
Reference ↗The pilot claimed he suffered a 'cognitive impairment' or blackout due to G-forces, but AAIB analysis of onboard cameras and control inputs suggested he remained conscious and in control.
Criminal Acquittal vs. Inquest Verdict
Reference ↗A jury cleared the pilot of manslaughter by gross negligence in 2019, but a 2022 coroner's inquest concluded the victims were 'unlawfully killed' due to the pilot's actions.
Pilot License Revocation and Appeals
Reference ↗In 2024 and 2025, Andrew Hill unsuccessfully appealed the revocation of his pilot licenses. The CAA noted he referred to himself in the third person and sought to disassociate himself from the crash, leading to revocation on grounds of both competence and fitness of character.
