The impact caused the AW139 to enter a rapid descent, crashing near the stairs of the Naval Base Stadium. The Fennec also lost control and crashed near a swimming pool within the base complex. The Royal Malaysian Navy established an investigation board which concluded that the primary cause was pilot error by the Fennec crew, who failed to maintain the required separation during the maneuver.
