Investigation Summary
On the morning of July 3, 1963, Flight 441 departed Whenuapai at 08:21 NZST. The flight was operating under the influence of a cyclone located north of New Zealand, which produced significantly stronger headwinds than the crew had been briefed on. Relying on timing for their navigation, the crew initiated a descent toward Tauranga, unaware that the stronger-than-forecast winds had slowed their progress, leaving them short of their intended position. At approximately 09:09 NZST, the aircraft entered the lee side of the Kaimai Ranges near the Gordon quarry. The aircraft was caught in a powerful downdraft and extreme turbulence. The Civil Aviation Authority investigation noted that the Kaimai Ranges were at the time classified as non-mountainous terrain, which allowed for a lower minimum safe altitude. The combination of the downdraft and the crew's premature descent led the DC-3 to strike a rock face at an altitude of 2,460 feet. While 22 occupants died instantly, evidence suggested one passenger, John Hardley, survived the initial impact but succumbed to his injuries before rescuers could reach the remote site.
