On the morning of October 25, 1938, the Kyeema departed Adelaide for a routine flight to Melbourne. As the aircraft approached the Melbourne area, it encountered a thick cloud layer extending from 1,500 down to 400 feet. Navigating primarily by visual landmarks, the crew spotted a town through a break in the clouds. They misidentified this town as Daylesford, when it was actually Sunbury. This error meant the aircraft was significantly further ahead than the crew realized. Because they believed they were still 19 miles from the airport, they did not begin a timely descent or realize they were flying toward the Dandenong Ranges. The investigation revealed that although navigational radio beacons had been installed, they were not operational at the time of the flight due to administrative delays and cost-cutting measures. In the final moments, the radio operator requested a bearing from Essendon, but the signal was lost mid-transmission as the aircraft struck the mountain. The crash site was located only a few hundred metres from the summit of Mount Dandenong.
