Investigation Summary
The accident occurred while Flight 348 was preparing for a scheduled flight to Moscow. During the pushback and engine start sequence, the crew followed standard procedures to bring the aircraft's generators online. However, the generator contactors, which were in a badly worn condition, failed to operate correctly. This failure created an abnormal circuit configuration that allowed electrical currents to reach levels 10 to 20 times higher than their nominal ratings. The resulting electrical arc ignited nearby materials in the fuselage center section. The fire breached the cabin almost immediately, creating a life-threatening environment for the 116 passengers and 18 crew members. Emergency services arrived within four minutes, but their efforts were initially complicated by the presence of evacuating survivors near the airframe. The fire eventually ignited leaking aviation fuel, which spread across the apron and consumed the majority of the fuselage.
Final Conclusions
The Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) released its final report in September 2011. The investigation concluded that the fire was caused by an electrical arc in the right-side generator contactor panel (frames 62-65). This arc resulted from two unsynchronized generators (No. 2 and No. 3) being connected together instead of to parallel buses. This was triggered by the connection of generators to the electrical network while the TKS233DOD contactors were in a state of extreme wear, featuring welded contacts and fractured insulation. A significant contributing factor was the absence of a formal maintenance schedule for the specific electric board involved, alongside a design difference in the generator 2 switching circuit that lacked a time delay, accelerating contactor degradation.

Unlike generators 1 and 3, the schematic for generator 2 allowed it to be brought online without a time delay when the switch moved from 'check' to 'enable'. This lack of a neutral-position delay increased wear on the TKS233DOD unit's normally closed contacts.
