Investigation Summary
The flight was operating the Rome to Cairo segment of a long-haul route originating in Amsterdam. At 04:09 local time, the crew reported passing the range beacon at 2,000 feet and was cleared for the approach. Due to the night conditions, the captain did not sight the airport lighting until the aircraft was nearly over the field. Upon sighting the lights, he initiated a 40-degree left turn to establish a heading parallel to the runway, positioning the aircraft to enter a right-hand circuit for runway 34. The co-pilot was instructed to keep the runway in sight while the aircraft flew downwind. Shortly after reporting downwind to the tower at 04:10, the captain commenced a right-hand turn toward the final approach. During this turn, and before re-establishing visual contact with the runway, the captain ordered the landing gear down and reduced engine power significantly to between 100 and 200 hp per engine. This power reduction, combined with the turn, led to an undetected loss of altitude. The aircraft struck a hill at 04:11 local time, just one minute after the last radio transmission.
Final Conclusions
The official investigation concluded that the probable cause of the accident was the pilot-in-command's inattention to his instruments. By focusing on visual cues outside the cockpit during a night approach in a period of transition between flight phases, the captain failed to notice that the aircraft had descended below the required altitude for the terrain south of the airport.
