Due to the aircraft being heavy with fuel for a transpacific flight, the pilots elected to dump fuel to reduce landing weight and mitigate the risk of a structural failure or overrun. However, the fuel was jettisoned at approximately 2,000 feet while the aircraft was on the approach path. The fuel did not atomize completely before reaching the ground, coating several elementary school playgrounds in liquid jet fuel.
