More-Electric Systems and the 2013 Battery Grounding
The 787-8 introduced high-power electric compressors and starters in place of pneumatic bleed air, drawing on GS Yuasa lithium-cobalt-oxide main and APU batteries. Two thermal-runaway events within a week in January 2013 — JAL's APU battery fire at Boston and ANA Flight 692's emergency landing at Takamatsu — triggered FAA Emergency AD 2013-02-11 and grounded the entire in-service fleet, then almost exclusively -8s, for roughly four months pending a redesigned stainless-steel enclosure and high-pressure venting.
Composite Structure and Lightning Protection
The 787-8 was the first commercial transport built with one-piece CFRP barrel fuselage sections and CFRP wings. Novel lightning protection using embedded copper mesh, expanded copper foil, and fastener conductivity controls was required to prevent delamination and fuel-vapour ignition. Post-2019 FAA scrutiny of shimming and structural join gaps at Boeing's Charleston line produced service bulletins on inspection and rework of previously delivered -8 airframes.
Trent 1000 and GEnx-1B Reliability Programmes
Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered 787-8s were disproportionately affected by intermediate-pressure turbine blade corrosion and fatigue cracking; at peak, dozens of -8s were grounded awaiting spare engines. GEnx-1B operators saw ice-crystal-icing HPC events and PIP2 software revisions. Both programmes drove ETOPS restrictions, mandatory borescope intervals, and life-limited-part changes specific to the -8 fleet, which entered service earliest.
Air India Flight 171 — First Fatal 787-8 Hull Loss
On 12 June 2025, Air India 787-8 VT-ANB operating AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick lost thrust on both engines within ~30 seconds of liftoff, briefly reached ~625 ft AGL, and impacted a medical-college hostel. 241 of 242 occupants and 19 people on the ground were killed (260 total). India's AAIB preliminary report documented both fuel-control switches transitioning from RUN to CUTOFF one second apart just after liftoff, with CVR audio of one pilot asking the other why the fuel had been cut. The investigation is examining the switch locking-detent design (subject of an earlier FAA SAIB), crew action and coordination, and the ram-air-turbine-only reconfiguration flight path.

Verdict
For 14 years the 787-8 combined a globally unprecedented grounding with a zero-fatality operational record. That ended with AI171, where both engine fuel-control switches were found in CUTOFF seconds after rotation. The variant's core systems architecture (more-electric power, CFRP structure, GEnx-1B/Trent 1000 propulsion) remains statistically robust, but AI171 has opened a fuel-control switch, human-factors, and post-liftoff dual-engine-loss investigation that will materially inform training and design guarding across the fleet.
