Investigation Summary
On the morning of January 16, 1965, the KC-135A, callsign Raggy 42, departed McConnell Air Force Base for a refueling mission involving a modified B-52 bomber. Almost immediately after liftoff, the aircraft struggled to gain altitude and began exhibiting unstable yawing motions. Witnesses observed the tanker flying unusually low as it attempted a turn to return to the base. In a desperate attempt to lighten the aircraft, the crew began dumping large quantities of fuel. However, the aircraft entered a steep left bank and rolled into an inverted nose-dive. The tanker struck a vacant lot near the intersection of 20th and Piatt Street, creating a 15-foot deep crater. The impact triggered a massive fireball as 31,000 gallons of fuel cascaded through the neighborhood, engulfing homes where families were eating breakfast. The disaster was exacerbated by the high density of the segregated neighborhood, leading to a high ground-fatality count. Early theories suggested a drag chute from an F-105 Thunderchief, left on the runway and blown by a preceding B-52, might have been ingested by the tanker's engines. However, recently un-redacted portions of the accident report indicate that the parachute ingested into the Number 1 engine actually belonged to the crew member who attempted to bail out through the crew entry door just before impact.
