On June 22, 2012, the RF-4E, belonging to the 173rd Wing, took off from Malatya Erhaç Air Base to assist in testing Turkish radar systems. The mission involved flying at various altitudes and profiles along the Mediterranean coast. At 11:42 local time, the aircraft entered Syrian sovereign airspace at an altitude of 200 feet, approximately 12 nautical miles from the coastline. Turkish radar controllers identified the violation and instructed the pilots to change course immediately. The aircraft exited Syrian airspace at 11:47, ascending to 3,000 feet and heading north toward Hatay. Despite being in international airspace at the time of the strike, the aircraft was engaged by Syrian defenses. Syria claimed the aircraft was flying low and fast over its territorial waters, justifying the shootdown as an act of defense against an unidentified intruder using anti-aircraft artillery. However, Turkish intelligence and subsequent analysis suggested the aircraft was targeted by a sophisticated surface-to-air missile system, specifically the Russian-made Pantsir-S1 (SA-22 Greyhound) or Buk-M2, which were recently delivered to Syria.
