Investigation Summary

The flight was a scheduled passenger service from London to Amsterdam. Upon arrival at Schiphol, the crew encountered poor visibility due to fog. After circling the airport three times and failing two landing attempts, the pilot likely spotted the runway lights while not properly aligned with the runway. In an effort to correct the alignment, the pilot initiated a steep left-hand turn at a low airspeed. Witnesses in the control tower reported that the engines appeared to stall when the aircraft was approximately 300 feet (91m) above the ground. Although the crew managed to restart the engines, the aircraft was at an insufficient altitude to recover. The C-47 struck the ground in a 65-degree nose-down pitch and a 45-degree left bank. The impact triggered a fire that lasted seven minutes, destroying the airframe. Rescuers arrived on the scene quickly but were unable to approach the wreckage to assist survivors due to the extreme intensity of the flames. At the time, this was the deadliest aviation accident in Dutch history.
