Investigation Summary
On the morning of April 17, 1986, Anne-Marie Murphy, a 32-year-old Irish chambermaid who was six months pregnant, attempted to board El Al Flight 016 to Tel Aviv. She had been convinced by her partner, Nezar Hindawi, that they were to be married in Israel. Hindawi provided her with a suitcase and a calculator, instructing her to lie to security about their relationship to avoid interrogation. Although the bag passed through standard Heathrow X-ray screening without incident, El Al security officers Yossi Orbach and Ofer Argov became suspicious during questioning. Murphy claimed she was staying at the Hilton in Bethlehem, a hotel that did not exist, and possessed insufficient funds for her trip. During a manual search, Orbach noticed the bag remained unusually heavy after being emptied. He discovered a false bottom containing 1.5 kilograms of plastic explosive (Semtex) and a detonator disguised as a calculator, set to trigger two hours into the flight. Hindawi was arrested the following day after fleeing the Syrian embassy and was later sentenced to 45 years in prison, the longest fixed sentence in British history at the time.
Final Conclusions
The investigation and subsequent trial of Nezar Hindawi concluded that the plot was a state-sponsored act of terrorism orchestrated by Syrian Air Force intelligence. Evidence included Hindawi's use of genuine Syrian official documents, his immediate flight to the Syrian embassy following the failed attempt, and forensic evidence linking him to the explosive packaging. Hindawi was convicted in October 1986. He was eventually granted parole in March 2013 and deported to Jordan.

Allegations of Mossad Provocation
Reference ↗Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and some European leaders, including Jacques Chirac, initially suggested the plot was a 'provocation' by the Mossad to discredit Syria, though Chirac later retracted this and British courts found no evidence for the claim.
