Investigation Summary

On March 20, 1982, the Fokker F28 was operating a domestic scheduled flight from Jakarta to Tanjung Karang. During the approach to Radin Inten II Airport (then known as Branti Airport), the region was experiencing intense rainfall. The aircraft touched down significantly late, roughly 700 meters beyond the start of the runway. Due to the heavy rain, the runway surface was likely affected by aquaplaning, which severely reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft's braking systems. The aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the remaining distance and overshot the runway end. During the overrun, the aircraft lost its undercarriage and slid for approximately 750 meters before coming to rest in a field. The impact was followed by an intense fire that consumed the wreckage.

Final Conclusions

The accident was caused by a runway overrun during landing in adverse weather conditions. Contributing factors included the late touchdown point and the presence of standing water on the runway, which led to ineffective braking. All 23 passengers and 4 crew members perished in the post-crash fire.
