On December 23, 1987, a Finnair DC-10-30ER was performing a non-stop polar flight from Tokyo to Helsinki. While cruising at 10,600 meters (34,800 feet) near Edgeøya, Svalbard, the two pilots on duty observed a missile approaching the aircraft from the front. According to their accounts, the missile rose to their altitude, changed course to head directly toward the aircraft, and then exploded in a massive dust cloud.
