Colin Richard Forman's descent into violence began following his dismissal from Connair in late February 1976. Having started in January 1976, he was terminated after only seven weeks when a past forgery conviction came to light. After losing a subsequent job at Ord Air Charter, Forman became convinced that Roger Connellan had blacklisted him by informing other employers of his criminal record. In the days leading up to the attack, Forman trashed his apartment in Mount Isa on 3 January 1977, leaving his pilot's logbook open to a page marked 'Suicide Mission' and 'THE END'. He drove 2,000 kilometres to Wyndham, where he intended to steal a larger aircraft, but settled for a Beechcraft Baron (VH-ENA) when his primary target was unavailable. He timed his arrival at Alice Springs to coincide with the airline's morning tea break, though a time zone difference caused him to arrive slightly later than planned. Moments before impact, he broadcast a final radio message stating, 'It is better to die with honour than live without it.' The aircraft struck the Connair complex at full power, causing a massive explosion and fire that gutted the administrative offices.
Final Conclusions
The disaster was a deliberate act of mass murder and suicide. Investigators found letters addressed to the Department of Transport in which Forman detailed his plan to cause the maximum amount of loss and hardship to Connair and to kill as many employees as possible. The attack remains one of the few instances of a deliberate suicide flight targeting a specific ground installation in Australian history. The airline, struggling with the loss of key personnel and the resulting financial strain, was eventually sold to East-West Airlines in 1980.
