The flight was a scheduled international passenger service from Rotterdam to Southend. Due to persistent fog at Southend, the crew elected to divert to Ferryfield Airport (Lydd) in Kent. During the third approach, the starboard engine lost power, followed shortly by the port engine. The pilot was unable to maintain altitude and the aircraft struck the beach approximately 1,200 yards north of the Dungeness Lighthouse. The impact caused severe damage to the nose and separated the starboard wing. The Accidents Investigation Branch (AIB) found that the engines stopped because the starboard fuel tank was empty, despite the port tank having plenty of fuel. The pilot's failure to switch tanks or manage the cross-feed system at a critical phase of flight led to the double engine failure. While the AIB report focused on the pilot's moderate injuries, some contemporary records and archives suggest that all seven occupants sustained injuries during the impact on the shingle beach.
