During the final approach to Runway 23 (now 23R) at Manchester Airport, the crew lowered the flaps to slow the aircraft. As the flaps extended, a critical bolt in the bottom of the starboard number 2 flap unit failed. The failure was attributed to metal fatigue that had developed over years of service stress. When the bolt snapped, the flap unit became partially detached from the trailing edge of the wing. The resulting displacement caused the flap to jam the aileron control mechanism. With the right wing losing lift and the ailerons locked, the aircraft entered a steep, shallow right-hand turn that the pilots could not correct. The aircraft struck the ground approximately one mile short of the runway and skidded into a housing estate in Wythenshawe. The impact and subsequent fire demolished two houses at the junction of Shadowmoss Road and Ringway.
