Investigation Summary
The B-52C involved in the accident was 15 years old and had not been structurally modified to handle the increased turbulence and air density of low-level flight. Recovery efforts were delayed by winter ice, but salvage operations in mid-1971 retrieved the engines and wing sections from a depth of 225 feet. Analysis of the wreckage confirmed that the main wing spars had succumbed to fatigue, leading to the total separation of the wing.
