Investigation Summary
Flight 6780 was a scheduled multi-leg flight from Buffalo to Newark. During the final leg from Syracuse, the crew encountered deteriorating weather at Newark, including light rain, fog, and a 400-foot ceiling. The flight was cleared for an ILS approach to Runway 6, monitored by Ground Control Approach (GCA) radar. Radar controllers initially observed the aircraft 900 feet left of the course at 5.5 miles out. The pilot corrected this, and at 4.5 miles out the aircraft was 300 feet left and returning to course. However, at 3.5 miles out, the aircraft began a rapid drift to the right. Within seconds, the Convair was 900 feet right of the course and vanished from radar screens due to ground interference at an altitude of approximately 400 feet. The aircraft struck a three-story brick building and a two-family frame house in a near-level attitude before exploding. Investigators found that weather conditions were favorable for the formation of carburetor ice, but the destruction of the aircraft and the lack of flight recorders at the time left insufficient evidence to determine why the aircraft drifted so violently off course.
Final Conclusions
The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) determined that there was insufficient evidence to predicate a probable cause for the accident. While investigators noted that weather conditions were conducive to carburetor ice and that the aircraft was significantly off course at a low altitude, the specific mechanical or human factors that led to the final deviation could not be established.
